the kitchenaid blender Assistive Fact

I’ve always really hated using blenders, mainly because they are such a pain to clean. Now that I’m pureeing my baby’s food, I’m forced to use a blender on a regular basis. I bought this one after the glass jar on my old one broke. Now that I’ve been using this blender for about a month, I’m so glad I broke my old one (and might have broken it sooner had I known! :))

What I love about the KitchenAid blender:
1) It is SO EASY to clean. Food doesn’t get stuck under the blades like the other ones I’ve used.
2) It is shatterproof. With a curious toddler in the house now, I’m a huge fan of things that can’t break.
3) Powerful. I’ve used it to puree fruits and veggies, and to make smoothies. The crush ice feature is nice because you can break up the ice before mixing it.

What I don’t love about it:
1) The base is really heavy
2) The buttons are a little weird. For example, to go from pulse to a regular speed, you have to hit Off first.
3) It’s struggled a little bit blending tough, stringy veggies like squash and sweet potatoes. Takes a bit longer and you have to help it along by stopping to stir it up. But this is the case with most blenders, I think!

In summary, the pros WAY outweigh the cons. I really love this blender!

After I tried holding the spindle, blocking the motor blades–all with no success, I found these instructions. Took 2 knocks and 10 seconds to remove the coupling!…

    (1) Note that the coupling (the round part with teeth) is threaded to the blender motor in reverse to a standard threading. So it screws off just like a bottle top, but in a clockwise direction.

    (2) place the blender base on a tabletop, facing you, base down/coupling up. You should probably unplug it.

    (3) take a punch or a flathead screwdriver, and place it against one of the coupling teeth that is furtherest away from you.

    (4) strike the back of the screwdriver with a small hammer or maillot. The result will spin coupling clockwise. It may take several tries, but the coupling will eventually spin clockwise faster than the motor, and it will begin to unthread.

    (5) unscrew the old coupling, and screw the new coupling into place (counterclockwise). Note that the new coupling will tighten itself every time you use your blender, so no need to worry about tightening it too much.

    (6) Make a smoothie to celebrate your success!

  • Tarplee :

Several other reviewers have mentioned this, unplug the blender, use a long screwdriver to stop the motor from turning (insert screwdriver from bottom of base up through one of the holes in blender base), and then unscrew the coupling. Simple and easy.

  • Sim :

This was fine it works great. The tough part was removing the old one. Apparently the part is made from softer metal then the post and threads on the post they are attached to. So basically you pry off and destroy the old coupler without worrying about the threads on the post of the blender. It was a little messy but the threads on blender post weren’t hurt. Also counter-intuitive was screwing the new part on the threads of the post. There was no way to stop the post from spinning so you just screw it on lightly. Apparently it tightens up during use because the direction of travel of coupler screws it on tight.

  • Mellinger :

This is the third time I’ve installed one of these across two different KitchenAid blenders.

Some advice: I personally found the instructions for popping the old part off with a screwdriver to be incredibly fast and efficient. Don’t be afraid to use your strength.

  • Ibarra :

I was very pleased with the adapter for the blender and it was easy to install. Now the blender actually works.

  • Flere :

This is a GREAT blender! Makes my old Osterizer look really bad. Makes smoothies in seconds. It’s really powerful. I like the polycarbonate jar, and I didn’t think I would. It cleans up easily and I like that the blade assembly stays in place - you just run the jar under the faucet to clean it. Nice design, smooth, easy to clean exterior. Sturdy and not as noisy as I imagined it would be. The base is kind of heavy, but who carries the base around? I don’t know why this color (caviar) was on sale - it’s really a beautiful black with microscopic little sparkles, like a metallic finish on a car’s paint job. It was an extremely good price, and I got a $[...] rebate from Kitchenaid on top of that.

  • O'Hare :

Just bought this blender based on the review in Cooks Illustrated. So far I’m very happy with it. Smoothies and margaritas are great to make in this blender, it crushes ice and frozen fruit effortlessly. Highly recommend it!

  • Norheim :

I ordered the KitchenAid KHB300 in lieu of the Cuisinart SmartStick from Crate&Barrel because of the reviews. I’m very glad I decided to do some research. The KitchenAid’s stainless steel shaft is solid and durable, the blades on both the blender and the food chopper are sharp and well positioned. The unit feels professional to the touch and I love the variable speed (1-9) functionality that many of the immersion blenders don’t offer. I have used the blender every day for the past 3 weeks for smoothies, guacamole, grinding fresh coffee beans and making pesto. It cleans easily and with the right amount of pulsing and speed adjustments you are able to get the consistency just right for everything you might need to blend/puree/grind.

  • Ricky :

This immersion blender was returned, for NO fault of the blender, it just wasn’t what I wanted. I purchased a Bamix, which was like one I’d had years ago. However, I find that Kitchen Aid appliances are good products in general.

  • Agajanian :

This baby blends like it was born to it. purees, frappes, shakes,
you name it it can blend it. I actually put some asphalt and
a couple of rocks into it, and made a real concrete.

  • Quizon :

This little wonder is so useful. You will find yourself using it for countless tasks. Makes great soups and gravies with the stick blender. The food processor attachment is amazingly better than by old Braun unit. It is very powerful, lots of stainless steel parts and the motor hums so smoothly and quietly. The unit is made in 2 pieces so that it is really easy to snap off the front and clean it without worrying about getting the cord or motor unit wet. This is the one to get.

  • Jane :

This is my second Kitchenaid immersion hand blender. I am what the world calls a Foodie. I put my kitchen appliances through the ringer. I use them on a daily basis and hard use at that. So the fact that my first blender lasted over 3 years says a lot about the quality. I am a big fan of Kitchenaid products. I made the mistake of buying a Magic Bullet and it was a piece of junk. Also they did not honor the warranty because I did not buy it directly for the Mfg.. Like a coworker said once you buy cheap stuff you get cheap stuff. Spend the little extra and buy a good blender like this.

  • Querrey :

I bought this hand blender to make soup and it did an awesome job–so much easer to blend the soup right in the the pot than putting small batches of soup through a regular blender one at a time. Lately I’ve been using it to make smoothies and I think I’m in love. It’s so fast and easy and the cleanup is a breeze! I put my old blender away and haven’t used it since I bought this thing.

  • Irvin :

This is my first immersion blender, but I am impressed with its capabilities so far. I do like the multi-speed options and it seems to be a sturdy little instrument.

The packaging, however, is a crime against the earth!! I would never have bought it, had I known that it came sandwiched between two huge nonbiodegradeable slabs of styrofoam. This aspect of the product seriously brings down its star rating in my book.

Amazon, you too, put on an offensive packaging show. The KitchenAid box was packed in a huge box, many times larger than the purchased product, and stuffed with non-recyclable plastic. :(

  • Quenell :

This hand blender works great. Easy cleanup and easy storage since the blade portion (and shaft) disconnect from the motor for cleaning. Having it break down into two pieces allows the blender to be stored easily in a drawer.

The adjustable power levels are great too. However, I would sure appreciate a “stay on” button on the next model.

This blender is great for making those quick Whey Protein and fruit shakes!

  • Childress :

Great hand blender for making baby food. We originally started with a traditional blender which was harder to get the food smooth and much harder to clean. This hand blender makes baby food in a snap and is easy to clean. It is also great for traveling as it easily fits into a suitcase. Highly recommend instead of a traditional blender for making baby food.

  • Ervine :

While it didn’t come with the chopper attachment, it’s a darn nice stick blender. The detachable stick cleans up easy, and the speed control is nice for when you’re making different consistencies of stuff. Far more convenient than a big old blender.

My only real complaint is that it doesn’t stand up on its own very easily. You can balance it in its cup, but it’s so top-heavy that it’ll fall right over.

  • Maass :

We are now on our second KitchenAid brushed chrome blender. The first one quit. I suspect I worked it too hard, making my own peanut butter. Until it quit it was perfect. When I called for service on this 8-month old blender, KitchenAid had a very nice American service rep who mailed me a new blender at their expense, with a box to return mine, at their expense.
I have never experienced customer service of this quality, ever. It’s KitchenAid appliances for me from now on. As for the peanut butter project, I think I was asking too much of a blender in this price range, so I’ll quit. If you want really heavy-duty blending, probably the astronomically-priced VitaMix is your baby. I’ll stick with KitchenAid for all my appliances. The appliances are good, but the service quality I received was fantastic. I sure hope they don’t try to figure out a way to cut costs in that department!!

  • Bernhardt :

I have used the KSB580NK for a month for making protein or fruit smoothies, two to three times a day. It performs well, and is more enjoyable than previous blenders in my experience. Compared to my last blender, an Oster “beehive”, it is more powerful, has a quieter motor, is easier to clean, and easier to remove the contents of the jar. The noise level is only very high for the first few seconds when blending ice, due to the ice cubes hitting the jar. The jar is well designed, capacious, and light weight. The lid seats and removes easily. As I had hoped, the convenience of having a one piece assembly, and not having to remove the blades for cleaning, is wonderful. Generally a stream of water from the faucet cleans the jar fine.

I have no real negative remarks. The intelli-speed is not as useful as I had hoped. It would be nice if the blending could begin very slowly when mixing dry and liquid ingredients, to prevent them from splattering the wall of the blender. I suppose you have to scrape the sides of the jar with any blender.

I just bought this blender based on being chosen #1 by Cook’s Illustrated Magazine, a publication I formerly held in high regard for their integrity & content. Like Consumer Reports, they do not accept advertising in their magazine so the assumption is that their advice is not slanted because they “have no horse in the race”.
I found out this is not the case.
Apparently they have a symbiotic relationship with Kitchen Aid. With my new blender came a postcard with a subscription offering for Cook’s Illustrated. My problem is that after doing some online research I found out that this blender is functionally the same as the much less expensive Kitchen Aid model KSB 560. The only difference is the coating on the base. The motor, container & controls are identical.[...]
When I inquired @ Cook’s Illustrated about why they hadn’t informed their readers about the better value of the KSB 560, their reply was “we haven’t reviewed this model”. I find that a very weak answer! I guess it’s like they say “it’s all about the Benjamins”
    I feel ripped off!!!
