Author: I have had my Vitamix 5000 for 5 and 1/2 years and could not be happier with it. Not only does it blend full frozen bananas (see other review), the powerful motor can do a lot more.
We use our Vitamix primarily for smoothies and milkshakes, and have learned that as long as there is some liquid in the container with the ice cubes and frozen bananas it will blend all into a smooth drink with ease.
The machine is loud for sure, not something you can hold conversation over, but we’ve noted that it blends so quickly, that the moments it takes to liquify are over before we’ve forgotten what we would have said anyway.
Clean up is also amazing with the Vitamix. As the Vitamix reps demonstrate, all we’ve done to clean it up after is wipe down any smoothie residue on the outside of the spout, fill container 1/3-ish of the way up with warm/hot water and a drip of soap, then blend on high for 30-ish seconds. Every month or so I DO wash a bit more thouroughly with maybe a drip of bleach and a scrub brush. One thing to consider though, is the longer you leave your container dirty the harder it will be to clean after. If you just rinse right away, you’re golden.
I cannot rave more highly about this machine. I’m sure that the multiple hundred dollar price tag is a turn off to most if not all, but consider the time saved as well as more options for healthy beverage alternatives! We’ve loved our Vitamix and you will too!

I purchased this blender after the Cook’s Illustrated “Best Buy” winner died (broke) after about a month of hard-core smoothie making…and instead of spending $5 a day on a smoothie, I bought this blender.
And I couldn’t be happier.
This thing is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Yes, it’s loud. VERY loud. But what it can do completely makes up for it. I had been considering the Blendtec, but went with the Vitamix because I wanted the plunger - and it indeed comes in very handy.
All I have made in this blender so far (and I have had it about two years) is smoothies and mixed drinks…and it excels at both. (I will be trying baby food in the near future.)
The most impressive thing is that you can throw in WHOLE PIECES OF FRUIT (stems, seeds, and all) and have it turn into a perfectly smooth smoothie (see user photos).
I highly HIGHLY recommend this blender, and think it will rock your world. You will never want to use a cheapo blender again.
I recently spent a few months living at a meditation center that had one of these babies…boy was I spoiled rotten! The power and speed is simply breath-taking, and I was told that it was over 5 years old to boot.
This is definitely going on my wish list. Am currently using an Oster “professional series” (ha ha) blender which for fifty bucks from my local warehouse club is adequate for my breakfast oatmeal/banana/whey smoothies, though it is seriously challenged by frozen bananas unless they’re cut into 1-2″ chunks not 3″ halves.
The thing is, one of these Vitamixes would pay for EIGHT of those Osters, so I am unable to justify the cost since I don’t really use the blender for serious juicing which would most benefit from the far more powerful Vitamix. I guess the way around that would be to convince myself of the need to regularly consume a lot of pureed veggies, hmmm…
This is the most extraordinary blender I’ve ever used. It is twice as big as most other ones and has the power to handle it. I also like that you don’t have to take it all apart to clean it. Excellent product.

Have no fear with this blender. I recently started incorporating raw food smoothies in to my diet. After burning out 2 standard household blenders in a matter of months, I knew I had to make an investment. Not only does this blender blend together everything that comes within its path, it does so in a matter of seconds - to a pure, even, liquid consistency. I had no idea what I was missing out on. My previous blenders made my smoothies more lumpy and with chunks; unable to process all the ice and frozen fruits and vegetables.
I also made soup! This blender spins so fast, that if left running for a few minutes, heats up water! This appliance is now a staple in my kitchen, from morning veggie smoothies, to hearty soups in the evening, to whipping up ice cream for dessert!
And…. saves me tons of time.
The key feature of this blender compared to its competitors is the AWESOME stirring wand, and access to put items in the mix via a whole in the top lid. This is KEY. No more using celery sticks to swish things around - the wand is super.
Love it! I have no fear when I throw in all kinds of things. It whips all up in a matter of seconds.
My only critique, is that since I started using this machine, my electricity bill went up $30! (I do live in nyc, tho).
i bought this for my mom for mother’s day because her jaw is not as strong as it used to be, and her favorite foods are apples and romaine lettuce. now, she blends up all of her fruits and vegetables (and a number of other things…) into delicious smoothies and is as healthy as ever. it’s only been about a month, but it has worked wonderfully.
We were hesitant to pay hundreds for a blender but now that I have it, I dont know how I ever lived without it. It has been a wonderful addition to my eating habits and breaks down the cellulose of greens to make them more absorbable to the body.It goes great with a book called green for life which explains all the great benifits of green smoothies. If you were to start this program, health would improve almost instantly! I am now getting allot more vitimins and minerals from my food than I used to, it keeps me on a raw food diet and is also good for soups. If theres something that my food processor cant do, the vita-mix can! I use it at every given oppertunity and makes great smoothies of any kind, even if you are not a raw foodist.
I love my Vita-Mix and would buy another one if I had to. Due to various health issues, I was compelled to change my eating habits because I enjoy living and wanted to continue. Since using my Vita-Mix to make green smoothies to increase my fruit and vegetable consumption, I have lost over 100lbs, no longer have to take diabetes or high blood pressure medications and haven’t had to take a sick day from work in over a year! Before, I was running out of sick time as I was out every month. I feel great every day and have been featured in an article in our workplace health & fitness newsletter and I lead a walking club at my job. I wasn’t even a couch potato, I was under the couch! Now, I don’t even have the couch any more..I don’t need to sit with all this energy! The Vita-mix is a great investment in your health and worth the expense.
I have owned this for over a year now, and despite all the rah rah rah, it is just a blender. It is a good blender but it will do for you what any other blender will do. Kitchen aid has better attachments for most anything you would want to attach, and most people own a kitchen aid so you would probably put an attachment on that instead of the vita-mix. Also this model doesn’t have a variable speed so its either high/low, on/off. Well made but it can still get stuck with a lot of frozen berries etc…
